Collections

Our collections consist of multidisciplinary American books, journals, reference materials, U.S. government publications, and think tank reports. In our four Libraries we have a total collection of about 82,721 books, 586 print periodicals with over a 10,000 journals in electronic format, 2,425 videocassettes, and subscriptions to several leading American newspapers. Our resources range from general reference and circulation collections to specialized collections of business management materials, American studies. The collections address issues such as encouraging Indo-US trade, promoting economic reform, infrastructure development, sustainable development, drug abuse, AIDS prevention and reduction, human rights, democracy, the global information infrastructure, multiculturalism, American society and values, history and politics. Each thematic area is supported by books, periodicals and videocassettes. In addition to print materials, all the four Libraries provide access to information in several electronic formats: CD-ROMs and online databases

ESL Corner

The ESL Corner, a new section of the American Libraries, aims to promote the teaching of American English by providing audiovisual materials to improve spoken English and resource materials to help English teachers.

Reference and Electronic Resources

Reference resources available at the American Libraries in India include dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias, almanacs, periodicals, periodical indexes, CD-ROM databases and online databases. In most cases, the reference collection is best used through a personal visit where professionally trained librarians provide customized service. However, if you cannot visit us, Library staff can respond to research and reference queries submitted through telephone, fax, mail, or e-mail.

Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)

The Library holdings can be accessed by a computerized Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). It allows searches for materials by key words, or through several access points like author, title, subject. The OPAC allows us to share resources among our four Libraries. This enables a book located in one Library to be easily lent to a patron at any other American Library.

Online Systems

Presently, several commercial and government online services are being used for value-added information access. Our reference librarians can access these online databases for your information needs.
